For immediate release
13 October 2023

As part of the Growth & Development Strategy for the Garden Route which was approved on 20 March 2021, and the Sustainable tourism cluster that flows from it, the Garden Route & Klein Karoo Tourism Unit of Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM), identified the film industry as an economic stimulant to potentially promote the Garden Route & Klein Karoo as the preferred tourism and film destination globally.

The GRDM received a request to assist with arranging a Famtrip for October. This led to a diverse delegation officially being welcomed by the GRDM Executive Mayor, Ald. Memory Booysen, in Bitou on 11 October. The Famtrip will conclude in Mossel Bay on 18 October 2023.

The following representatives form part of the trip:

  • Jennifer Farris – LMGI – Atlanta, USA;
  • Kate Beall – LMGI – New York, USA;
  • Joseph Mennella – LMGI – Boston, New York;
  • Lwazi Mvusi – Rous House, South Africa;
  • Shadley Lombard – Moonlighting / Know Associates;
  • Khanyeza Khanyeza – Moonlighting / Know Associates;
  • Thamebi Zikalala – SA Film Chronicles; and
  • Azania Muendane – Locations Africa.

Location Africa, a private sector entity, are set up to facilitate the promotion of Africa as a filming destination of choice. They are looking primarily at high-end producers locally, abroad and inter-continental to use the various regions of the continent as film locations.

The more the producers experience, the better they are able to imagine what can be produced in the region without having to cheat the location elsewhere, in post-production, or in studios. This ensures that they have a full idea of what is achievable in the region and thus promoting the Garden Route as a film-friendly destination

Media Release: The Garden Route and Klein Karoo – An Ideal Film Destination

18 September 2023

The Garden Route and Klein Karoo, stretches from Witsand to Plettenberg Bay, right around to Oudtshoorn as well as Calitzdorp and Ladismith on the infamous R62. Situated about 280km from Cape Town, and is one of South Africa’s richest treasures, where you can lose yourself in nature, between majestic mountain ranges, breath-taking views, a natural garden of rich, colourful vistas, with valleys and lakes, rivers and forests, with miles upon miles of beautiful, white sandy beaches and a brilliant blue coastline.

The Garden Route and Klein Karoo comprise locations for TV, Film and Commercials, and is ideally placed to not only manage any overflows from other filming destinations but to become a major player in its own right in the industry. The Garden Route and Klein Karoo has a competitive advantage with their multiple localities and is able to package and offer a wide range of locations (forests, vineyards, mountains, farms, tree houses, tented camps, dams, rivers, beaches, airport, railway, game lodges, caves, heritage sites and buildings, industrial areas, which is broader than just its internationally recognised natural advantages). A range of services are available and on offer in the district to assist the industry in producing high-quality films in the Garden Route district.

Durban FilmMart attended by Garden Routers

Eleven (11) delegates from the Garden Route, including Garden Route Film Office (GRFO) members, visited the Durban FilmMart (DFM) between 18 and 22 July 2019. This festival is a joint programme of the Durban Film Office (DFO) and the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) and takes place in conjunction with Durban International Film Festival that spans over a 10-day period, between 18 and 28 July 2019.

Mr Jacques van der Merwe (Director: GRFO), Mr Philip de Vries (Chairperson: GRFO) and Mr Clyde Berning.

Cllr Liza Stroebel, who represented Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) at the DFM, said: “The presence at such a festival is vibrant and exciting.   To see the hype of activities within the film industry under one roof and to be able to meet and greet foreign contingents, attend panel discussions and interact socially with artistic individuals within the broader film industry in South Africa and abroad, was an amazing experience.    I learnt so much about the film industry and will now be able to better represent the Garden Route District Municipality in the film industry in the Garden Route.”

Mr Jacques van der Merwe (Director: GRFO), left, with students at the DIFF, (fltr): Cara Botha, Amy Jansen, Antonie Botha, Moses Williams, and Stefan Kloppers (Standing)

“The purpose of the inclusion of learners from our region to the DFM was to expose them to the functioning of the industry on ground level and the value which could be added and brought to the Garden Route,” said Cllr Stroebel.

What the Durban FilmMart offers
