Fire and Rescue Services

Garden Route District Municipality provides the following Fire and Rescue Services as per the Local Government, Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998, Chapter 5, 84 (j):

(j) Firefighting services serving the area of the district municipality as a whole, which includes-

   (i) planning, co-ordination and regulation of fire services;

   (ii) specialized firefighting services such as mountain, veld and chemical fire services;

   (iii) co-ordination of the standardization of infrastructure, vehicles, equipment and procedures; and

   (iv) training of fire officers.

In addition, Garden Route District Municipality attends to hazardous material incidents over the entire district. Moreover, firefighters render mutual assistance with firefighting (structural) and rescue services to local municipalities. Garden Route District Municipality also offers advice on fire prevention strategies to landowners and the general public alike.

As a district municipality, Garden Route District Municipality has the following resources to optimally perform an effective and efficient service, to the public, namely:

  • 1 x Main Fire Station in George which includes 4 Fire Officers and 24 firefighters, as well as 3 medium tankers and 4 skid units (bakkies).
  • A Sub-Station in Riversdale which includes 6 firefighters, 1 medium 4×4 fire tender and a 4×4 skid unit (bakkie).
  • A Sub-Station in Ladismith which include 6 firefighters, 1 medium 2×4 fire tender, 1 rescue bakkie and a 4×4 skid unit (bakkie).

Along with the above, the Council annually approves the recruitment of 10 – 12 learner firefighters for the high-risk fire season which stretches from 01 December to 30 April.
