Discussion: The warm to hot temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds could result in the development of runaway and veld/bush fires.

Impact: Conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. Under these conditions, fires may develop and spread rapidly resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human and/or animal life.

 Instruction: Fireteams, labour and equipment are to be placed on stand-by.  A first sign of smoke, every possible measure should be taken in order to bring the fire under control in the shortest possible time.

Discussion: Rain associated with a cold front will spread to the coastal areas of the Garden Route on Thursday. Rainfall accumulations are expected to reach 30-40mm in George, Knysna and Bitou municipalities from Thursday late morning into the evening. Due to the expected rainfall figures, there is a high likelihood of minor disruptions in these municipalities.

Impact: Localised flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements and roads may occur. Major roads may be affected but can still be used with increased travel times. There could be localised motor vehicle accidents due to wet slippery roads and/or reduced visibility. Difficult driving conditions on dirt roads can also be expected.

Instruction: In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level. Switch off electricity at the supply point to the building. Be especially cautious at night when it’s harder to recognize flood dangers when driving. Listen to the radio or TV for warnings and obey the instructions from disaster management officers.

Discussion: Rain and showers associated with a high-pressure system moving in behind a cold front will spread to the coastal areas of the Garden Route tomorrow (Saturday). Accumulations of 30-45mm can be expected east of Mossel Bay during the morning continuing until early afternoon. Due to the expected rainfall figures, there is a high likelihood of minor disruptions, affecting the above-mentioned areas.
Impact: Localised flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements and roads may occur. Localised motor vehicle accidents are likely on wet slippery roads. Difficult driving conditions on dirt roads can also be expected.

The Cape Town Weather Office has issued an Impact Based Warning for the Western Cape and Namaqua Region of Northern Cape as follows:

Alert Level: Level 2 (High likelihood of minor impacts)
Affected Municipalities: Beaufort West, Bitou, George, Hantam, Kannaland, Karoo Hoogland, Khâi-Ma, Knysna, Laingsburg, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn, Prince Albert

Discussion: Rain and thundershowers are expected from mid-morning persisting until the evening. Rainfall accumulation of 15-30mm are expected with up to 50mm in pockets within the cloud band are possible; some showers can have a quick and heavy downpour (15-20mm/h). The lightning associated with the thundershowers might cause some impacts.

Impact: Localised flooding/flash flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements and roads may occur which can affect major routes contributing to longer travel times together with reduced visibility and slippery roads can also cause minor vehicle accidents. Isolated events of lightning can contribute to localised service disruption due to power surges.

Instruction: In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level. Switch off electricity at the supply point to the building. Be especially cautious at night when it’s harder to recognize flood dangers when driving. Listen to the radio or TV for warnings and obey the instructions from disaster management officers.

31 January 2022 Weather Advisory: Western Cape and Namaqua

Discussion: Extremely hot conditions are expected over the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch LM (W.Cape) where temperatures may reach 40°C on Monday. Along with the generally hot weather, heat wave conditions are also expected in places over Swartland LM, Cape Metropole, western parts of Cape Winelands, Overberg and Little Karoo until Tuesday.

Impact: In an extreme hot environment, the most serious health and safety concern is heat stroke. Heat stroke can be fatal if medical attention is not available immediately.

Instruction: Avoid prolonged direct exposure to the sun as far as possible and drink plenty of water. Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated. Never leave kids in the car unattended. Make sure your animals have access to enough water.

Discussion: Wave heights of 4-6m with wave periods of at least 18s and strong south-easterly winds with wind speed of 40-60km/h are expected between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas on Friday morning (21/01/2022), spreading to Alexander Bay by the afternoon and to Plettenberg Bay in the evening. These conditions together with spring tide will result in higher wave heights.

 Impact: Difficulty in navigation for small vessels and personal water craft which may lead to vessels being at risk of taking on water and capsizing. Localised disruptions of small harbours or ports is possible for short period. Localised damage to coastal infrastructure is possible. Localised disruption to beachfront activities. Public at risk of being swept of coastal rocks due to infrequent large waves.

Instruction: Small vessels are advised to seek shelter in harbours, bays or inlets.
